The 2024 Songzhumei Scholarship Award Ceremony of the University Alliance was grandly held

[US News Service Los Angeles] On Saturday afternoon, July 27, 2024, the 11th College Alliance Pine, Bamboo and Plum Scholarship Award Ceremony was held at St. Mark's Lutheran Church and School in Hacienda Heights, Los Angeles. This year's scholarships are sponsored by the Southern California Chinese University Alumni Association Alliance (hereinafter referred to as the "University Alliance") and the University Alliance Education Foundation; led by the Southern California Alumni Association of the University of Science and Technology of China, co-organized by the American Alumni Association of Xidian University, the Southern California Alumni Association of Shandong University, and the Southern California Alumni Association of Sun Yat-sen University, co-organized by 11 alumni associations, and supported by 13 alumni associations (see the poster below for the list of hosting, co-organizing and supporting alumni associations).

Mr. Guo Zhiqiang, Deputy Consul General of the Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles, Ms. Wang Qun, Consul of the Education Department, Dr. Judy Chu, U.S. Congresswoman, Mr. Jorge Herrera Avila, representative of California State Treasurer Fiona Ma, Mr. Tony Ding, San Gabriel City Councilman; a team of eight led by Ms. Carol Cheow, CEO of this year's title sponsor Can Guo Foundation, and Mr. Zhang Tieliu, silver sponsor, Principal of Feida Education, Ms. Vickie Zhang, loving sponsor, CEO of Xinli International Education, and Ms. Zhang Xiaoli, Chairperson of the Parent Executive Committee of the Franklin Foundation; Ms. Li Yifei, personal sponsor and Executive Vice President of the Taishan Athletic Association of Los Angeles; and about 50 guests including former presidents and chairmen of the University Alliance, representatives of member alumni associations, etc.; more than 300 people attended the award ceremony, of which 93 outstanding Chinese students in Southern California were awarded scholarships or grants.


The award ceremony was co-hosted by Ms. Sun Xiaolu, Director of the Literature and Art Department of the University Alliance, and Mr. Jia Wangcun, Vice President of the Chiao Tung University Southern California Alumni Association.

This year's award ceremony attracted more than 300 attendees, and a total of 93 outstanding Chinese students in Southern California received scholarships or grants. The scholarship received 216 valid applications, and ultimately 90 students received scholarships, with a winning rate of 41.67%. The scholarship received 8 valid applications, and ultimately 3 freshmen received the scholarships, with an award ratio of 37.5%.

The details of each scholarship group are as follows:

Primary school group: 46 valid applications were received and 18 students were awarded, accounting for 39.13%.

Junior high school group: 76 valid applications were received, and 32 students were awarded, accounting for 42.11%.

High school group: 94 valid applications were received and 40 students were awarded, accounting for 42.55%.

University Group: 8 valid applications were received, and 3 freshmen were awarded, accounting for 37.5%.

Ms. Li Shan, the chairperson of the organizing committee of this scholarship program, the president of the university alliance, and an alumnus of Xidian University, said in an interview with the media that "the establishment of the Song, Zhu, and Mei Scholarship is aimed at encouraging and improving the academic performance and social activities of Chinese children, and promoting their greater integration into American society, thereby enhancing their competitiveness in the United States.

The program rewards outstanding Chinese students and encourages them to create and obtain opportunities through fair competition, personal efforts and self-improvement, rather than relying on skin color or racial quotas. Through this project, we hope to convey the concept of social responsibility to the next generation, cultivate their sense of responsibility, and encourage them to join us in striving for fairer treatment and educational opportunities for Chinese Americans in the United States. ”

Mr. Zhang Ming, Chairman of the Organizing Committee and Chairman of the University Alliance Education Foundation, reported on the work of the Organizing Committee. On behalf of the organizing committee, he expressed his warmest congratulations to the students and parents who received the scholarships, and expressed his most sincere gratitude to the title sponsor, all the sponsoring institutions, caring individuals, alumni associations, as well as the attending guests and people from all walks of life. We welcome more companies and groups to participate in the foundation's projects and jointly support the development of Chinese students in Southern California in the United States.

Zhang Ming introduced the key points of innovation of this year's scholarship program to the guests as follows:


1) The unified project name is "College Alliance Songzhumei Scholarship", and the scope of recipients covers primary school students to college students, that is, the scholarship is for students in grades G1-G12, and the scholarship is for college students.

2) Expand the scope of funded students to include Chinese students who have settled in Southern California.

3) Add extra points for speaking Chinese to encourage Chinese students to pay attention to Chinese and strengthen the inheritance of Chinese culture.

4) The Foundation will establish a new review committee and implement expert review of scholarships and grants.

5) Introduce a mechanism for alumni associations to participate as co-organizers/supporters, giving them a sense of honor in co-organizing charitable and public welfare projects.

6) Create a new “Special Targeted Donation” scholarship + option. That is, donors are encouraged to select Chinese college students according to their wishes and provide targeted funding for their university studies until graduation.

In his speech, Deputy Consul General Guo Zhiqiang of the Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles praised the innovative measures of the 11th Song, Bamboo and Plum Scholarship, which combined scholarships and grants into one, achieving the effect of 1+1 greater than 2. He particularly mentioned China's initiative to invite 50,000 outstanding American young people to study in China over the next five years, and a group of young people have already made the trip.

U.S. Congresswoman Dr. Judy Chu flew from San Francisco to the award ceremony that day. She highly praised the achievements made by the organizing committee over the past decade, helping about 600 students from K1 to university freshmen realize their educational dreams.


Congresswoman Judy Chu particularly pointed out that the uniqueness of the Song, Bamboo and Plum Scholarship Program lies in that it not only focuses on students' GPA, but also attaches importance to students' qualities in many aspects such as social volunteer service, cultural and artistic attainments, and public speaking ability. She presented certificates of commendation to the University Alliance, the University Alliance Education Foundation, the Canguo Foundation, the Gu Foundation and Feida Education for their significant contributions to this year's scholarship program.

In her speech, Ms. Carol Cheow, CEO of the title sponsor Canguo Foundation, quoted the words of Guan Zhong, a famous minister in Chinese history: "The best plan for a lifetime is to cultivate people", emphasizing the importance of education for families, companies and nations.


As a non-profit charity, the Canguo Foundation originates from family cultural heritage and is committed to helping students from poor families but with lofty ambitions open the door to wisdom and improve their thinking and cognitive abilities. In order to continue to spread charity and love, Canguo Foundation is willing to work with everyone to let this love continue forever.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, Ms. Lisa Liu, Chairperson of the University Alliance, expressed the warmest congratulations to the nearly 100 award-winning Chinese students. She hopes that the scholarship can become a highlight in the students' lives and motivate them to keep moving forward.


President Liu Lisha especially thanked the sponsors, the alumni associations that hosted and co-hosted the event, the organizing committee, and all the volunteers who participated in the event. She said, "Without your support, there would be no successful awards ceremony!"

他還希望未來有更多的華裔子弟參政,成長為議員、州長甚至總統。最後,丁言愉市議員向所有贊助商代表頒發了城市賀狀,以表彰他們對獎助學金的慷慨捐助。

本屆獎學金共有20位評委(名單見文後)。評審組綜合考慮了學業GPA成績、才藝技能、課外活動表現、命題作文以及中文能力等方面,共頒發了 90 份獎學金。

頒獎典禮上邀請了三位獲獎學生進行才藝表演。高中組的沈如瀾(Angel Shen) 演繹了一首展現大自然寧靜與和諧的柔美歌曲《寂靜的正午》(Silent Noon);曾在卡内基音樂廳演出的 Vivian,為觀眾獻上了一曲技術精湛、情感豐富的巴赫《G小調小提琴奏鳴曲》;主演過兩季Disney+系列劇《天才神秘公司》的徐亦涵,自彈自唱了一首充滿鄉愁的《成都》,感動了在場的每一位觀眾。
